Why Preventive Care Matters

Preventive dentistry is the foundation of lifelong oral health. By identifying and addressing issues early, we can help your child avoid cavities, toothaches, and more serious dental problems down the road. At Harrison Pediatric Dentistry, our goal is to keep your child’s smile healthy, confident, and cavity-free.

What’s Included in Preventive Care?

We offer a full range of preventive services designed specifically for kids, including:

How Often Should My Child See the Dentist?

We typically recommend visits every six months for most children. These routine checkups allow us to:

Monitor tooth and jaw development

Catch small issues before they become bigger problems

Reinforce healthy habits at home

For children with specific dental concerns, we may recommend more frequent visits.

Simple ways to prevent cavities at home

Great dental habits at home do most of the heavy lifting. A few things that make the biggest difference by age:

  • Babies and toddlers. Wipe gums after feeding, brush with a smear of fluoride toothpaste once teeth appear, and avoid bottles in bed.
  • Young kids. Brush twice a day with a pea-sized amount of toothpaste, and help them until they can do a thorough job on their own, usually around age 7 or 8.
  • Older kids. Add daily flossing, limit sugary and sticky snacks, and choose water over juice and soda.

Cavity Prevention That Works

Even with great brushing and flossing, kids are still prone to cavities. At Harrison Pediatric Dentistry, our team uses fluoride treatments and dental sealants as an extra layer of protection, especially on hard-to-reach molars. These preventive tools can dramatically reduce your child’s risk of decay.

FAQS

Preventive questions parents ask

Q: How often should my child see the dentist?

A: For most kids, every six months. Some children who are more prone to cavities benefit from more frequent visits, and we will let you know if that applies to your child.

Q: Are dental sealants safe for children?

A: Yes. Sealants are a thin, protective coating on the chewing surfaces of back teeth. They are quick, painless, and one of the most effective ways to prevent cavities in kids.

Q: How can I prevent cavities in my child's teeth?

A: Brush twice a day with fluoride toothpaste, floss daily once teeth touch, keep sugary snacks and drinks in check, and keep up regular checkups so we can catch anything early.
